Everything You Need to Care for Your Oak Barrel

Keep your oak aging barrel clean, protected, and ready for your next batch. Our Cleaning and Maintenance Kit includes the essentials for cleaning your barrel, preventing unwanted mold and bacteria during storage, and maintaining a proper seal.

What’s Included

  • Citric Acid Powder – Helps clean and refresh the inside of your barrel.
  • Oxy-San Powder – Provides a deeper cleaning to help remove unwanted bacteria and residue.
  • Campden Tablets – Used when storing your barrel with water to help prevent mold and unwanted microbial growth.
  • Barrel Wax – Helps seal small leaks around the exterior of the barrel.

Cleaning Your Barrel

1. Clean with citric acid
Fill the barrel with water and add the citric acid powder. Allow it to sit for a couple of days, then empty and rinse thoroughly.

2. Clean with Oxy-San
Refill the barrel with water and add the Oxy-San powder. Allow it to sit for a couple of days, then empty and rinse thoroughly.

3. Rinse and prepare for aging
Rinse the barrel thoroughly with clean water before filling it with your whiskey, bourbon, rum, tequila, or other spirit.

Storing Your Barrel

If you need to store your barrel with water between batches, crush a Campden tablet and add it to the water-filled barrel. This helps discourage mold growth while the barrel is being stored.

Using the Barrel Wax

Small leaks can sometimes develop as a wooden barrel expands and contracts. Apply barrel wax to the outside of the affected area to help create a seal without introducing wax to the inside of the barrel.

With a little routine care, your oak barrel can stay clean, sealed, and ready for many more batches.
