Barrel Wax

Seal stubborn leaks and keep your oak barrel ready for aging.

Barrel wax is designed to help seal small exterior leaks that remain after your oak barrel has been properly cured. It can be used around the barrel head, pinholes, and between barrel staves where small leaks may develop as the wood expands and contracts.

Before using barrel wax, always allow your barrel time to cure. In many cases, the wood will swell naturally and seal minor leaks on its own. If a leak remains after curing, barrel wax provides a simple way to help create a seal from the outside of the barrel.

If your barrel has several leaking areas or a larger leak, you may need additional wax.

How to Use Barrel Wax

1. Cure the barrel first
Fill and cure your barrel according to the recommended instructions. Give the wood time to absorb water and swell. Many small leaks will seal naturally during this process.

2. Dry the leaking area
If a leak remains after the barrel is fully cured, empty the barrel if necessary and dry the outside of the leaking area as thoroughly as possible with a clean cloth.

3. Apply the barrel wax
Place the leaking area facing upward so liquid is not actively dripping while you work. Apply a small amount of barrel wax to the exterior of the barrel and press it firmly into the wood grain around the leak.

4. Wipe away excess wax
Smooth the wax over the affected area and wipe away any excess. You do not need a thick layer—a small amount worked into the wood is usually sufficient.

Barrel wax should be applied only to the outside of the barrel. With proper curing and maintenance, your oak barrel can stay sealed and ready for many more batches.
