Great Cigars Deserve a Great Barrel

An oak barrel is a beautiful way to keep cigars. The thick staves hold a steady temperature, the cork lid seals the top, and the wood itself carries a warm, faintly sweet aroma that settles into the air around your cigars. Add a humidifier or beads to hold the moisture where you want it, and you have a storage piece that looks like nothing else on the shelf.

What’s Included

  • Oak cigar barrel
  • Cork lid

Humidity beads and barrel accessories are sold separately.

Getting Started

Do not cure this barrel with water. Our liquid-aging barrels are filled with water so the wood swells and seals. A cigar barrel is the opposite — it needs to stay dry. Wipe the inside with a clean, dry cloth and let it air out for a day or two before you use it.

  1. Wipe out the inside and let the barrel air for a day or two.
  2. Add a humidifier or humidity beads, charged according to their instructions.
  3. Place a small digital hygrometer inside — it measures the humidity level so you can see what the barrel is holding.
  4. Let it settle for a few days and check the reading before you add cigars.
  5. Add your cigars, seat the cork lid, and keep the barrel out of direct sun.

Cigars keep best at roughly 65–70% relative humidity and 65–70°F. Check the hygrometer every week or so, especially in the first month while the barrel finds its balance. Above about 75% you risk mold; well below 60% and wrappers begin to dry and crack.

Seasoning Your Barrel

Some cigar smokers like to give their storage a character of its own. The oak will do a little of this on its own, and you can encourage more. The effect is real but gentle — it lives in the aroma of the wrapper and the air in the barrel rather than deep in the tobacco, and it takes weeks rather than days.

With a spirit. Dampen — do not soak — a cedar spill or a small piece of Spanish cedar with rum, bourbon or cognac. Let the surface alcohol flash off for an hour, then set it in the barrel where it does not touch the cigars. Replace it when the scent fades.

With dry aromatics. A few coffee beans, cocoa nibs, a split vanilla bean, dried orange or lemon peel, or a cinnamon stick, kept in a small open dish or a breathable pouch. Dry aromatics are the safer route, because they add scent without adding moisture.

A few things worth knowing:

  • Never apply liquid directly to a cigar. It stains the wrapper, raises the moisture unevenly and invites mold.
  • Anything damp inside the barrel raises the humidity. Watch the hygrometer for the first week after you add it, and take it out if the reading climbs.
  • Scent travels between cigars stored together. If you want some left as they are, keep them in a separate barrel.
  • Taste as you go. Pull a cigar after a few weeks and see where it is before committing the rest of the box.
